It's a tragedy...interesting in terms of the backdrop, an okay rea
The background of this story is that it takes place in an extremely interesting time in history, during the British occupation (under the Balfour Declaration) of the region then called Palestine. It was a time when the future sovereignty of the geography was evolving but unclear. Relationship between the British, the Jews and the Arabs were extremely complicated and, of necessity, fraught with suspicion. There are three main characters. As the story unfolds, we learn each has come to Palestine, on the run from their lives in a state as unresolved as the geography to which they have fled as. To the extent their troubled characters are developed, they act out and we become witnesses to their personal unfinished business as it infects every interaction between them fueling bad decisions which put them on a collision course. In contrast to all of the larger issues of time and place, each of them is thoroughly self-involved and none of them, in my opinion, very likeable. There is one redeeming character in the book, a minor one, while also leaving a troubled past behind, has come to Palestine optimistic and open to it's possibilities. In the end, who she is does seems to transform one of the three major players, but you have the sense she deserves better. The book title and cover suggest a steamy romance. I'm sure those are things which helped to sell the book, but if you are looking for a feel romantic adventure, this is not it. When you turn to and finishing reading the last page, there is no doubt this is a tragedy.

    An interesting read.
An interesting read. Some of the articles are much better than the others, but overall it gave me a great deal to think about and some new found appreciation for the Un'taneh Tokef, the language of which I have always found to be disturbing.
