Dreams from Bunker Hill by Fante, John
    15. Mär 2017
    LA 1930s
John's character Arturo Bandini just wants be be a writer in LA in the 1930s. He eeks out a living by the sale of short stories, but he just can't seen to make the big score. He hits the hay with the old landlady who owns the flop house when he lives until he is offered a job as a screenwriter at six hundred a week. He moves in to his new office and waits for an assignment while eyeballing his gorgeous secretary who won't give him the time of day---until. He complains to his boss about the lack of work. The boss replies "you're doing fine--keep it up the good work"--but he isn't doing any work just bumming around LA. The "great Bandini" as he sees himself, is John Fante and it is the comic, very funny story of his trials and tribulations in LA/Hollywood trying to make it as a writer. This is a very enjoyable book that you will not put down especially if you want to be a writer.

Afoot in England by Hudson, William, 3rd

A Stroll Thru England in 1909
The author takes you for a walk through parts of England in 1909 in the rain and sunshine. He talks about the flowers, birds, insects, flowers, trees etc. They didn't have bottled water back then so he often stops off at a farmhouse to beg some milk. I am amazed he did not suffer from dehydration. He also begs for places to sleep for the night. He embarked upon his adventure with virtually no money and survived on the kindness of county folk. An enjoyable, easy read. My only complaint was the print size. It is microscopic. That is why I gave it 3 stars. 1 star for type, 5 stars for story.
