Over ambitious, but some essential listening for the novice.
There are plenty of compilations out there which seek to sum up American folk music or "americana". This one is as good as any single disc examples. With 22 tracks. there are plenty of big names on here and very little padding. Sometimes you buy compliations only to find that half the tracks are covers or fillers churned out by an obscure studio house band. On this CD you will find Woody Guthrie, Doc Boggs and Josh White at one end of the spectrum, with Lucinda Williams and Phil Ochs at the other. There are a good few individual gems and it all serves as a helpful introduction for someone unfamiliar with the artists or the genre. The best thing about good compilations is that they do just that - they are tasters that invite you to find out more. The sleeve notes are informative and tell you where the recordings are taken from, should wish to explore further. The worst thing about compilations like this is that the material does not always sit comfortably together. Perhaps the range is too wide and over ambitious for one disc. You also become aware of the omissions - no CD like this could claim to be a comprehensive introduction to American folk music, because of space restrictions or copyright control issues. I only paid a couple of quid for this on EBay and I think I got a bargain. This is a useful compilation, but beware -it only scratches the surface of the tradition that it claims to represent.

Great songs with more than a nod in the direction of REM.
Interesting lyrics and strong melodies. Guest appearances by Peter Buck, Gillian Welch and others make for a rich and varied sound shot through with an Americana vibe. They make no secret of the REM influence which is particularly noticeable on Down By The Water (when I first heard that track on the radio I thought it WAS REM), but that's no bad thing. I have played this many times since it arrived last week.
