Affordable at a glance battery status!
If you are installing any system that relies on battery storage and you require a cheap easy method of keeping a close eye on your expensive batteries, you can't go wrong with this unit.
I have used a few of these meters now and I am very impressed.
These meters will display voltage, current, power, and remaining capacity in Ah or expressed as a %. The dual display can be set to display voltage plus residual percentage for at a glance battery status. The display can be turned off to save a bit of power or just because you don't like to see the display all the time, the meter continues to monitor in the background.
The measurements can be calibrated to improve accuracy and in my experience they are certainly accurate enough for most if not all battery installations.
The measured voltage range (10V) can be a little restrictive on the lower end in 12V systems but this is easily remedied with a small external power supply, if you are happy with the lower reading limit (and most will be) the meter can be powered from the measured supply for ease of installation.
The current measuring range is set by the shunt resistor placed in the return path to the battery - and are available to suite most requirements from 30 to 200A.
A charge LED comes on when the current flow is into the battery (charge) and goes out when the current flow is out of the battery (discharge).
The remaining charge is calculated from the current flow into and out of the battery. This technique of calculating the residual charge (coulomb counting) is fair enough at this price range but leads to inaccuracy due to losses in the charge / discharge cycle. Put simply you don't get back out all that you put in, and the faster you pull it out the less you get back. Losses in a lead acid battery can be in the region of 10% so the inaccuracy can be considerable. Higher priced meters (much higher) apply Peukert's factor to improve on this accuracy but it is too much to expect at this price range. Regular resetting of the battery state of charge from a known state (full charge) can help to keep the record straight.
Apart from the simplified method of calculating the remaining capacity the only thing that would improve this unit would be the addition of an adjustable low battery alarm output, but that's just my opinion of what would make this unit a lot more versatile for little if any extra cost, but no big deal.
This is still the best unit by far for the money.

Multi use test probe set.
This is an excellent value and quality test probe set. Equivalent in quality and parts to the Hirschman set that I purchased a few years ago for $120+. The only thing that I would have preferred in the set would have been piggyback banana leads but you can't have it all. Superb for the bench and site work that I perform daily.

Fix those loose straps on your head lamps
Quick and easy to replace, cheap to buy, now all my head lamps sit on my head the way they should.
Elasticated straps lose their tension with age rendering head lamps useless after a few years. These straps fit pretty much any head lamp. They may well have uses on other head mounted devices too?
