A film like no other..
Review of Nouveaux 2disc edition(2005- film released in 1985) ,the extras on disc2. interviews with the main actor, director & production designer + 2 short 'propaganda/newsreel' sections from the '40s, filmographies & a picture gallery .
On disc1 is the film (137mins) ,it has an English dubbed version -& also the much better Russian language original + subtitles available on this disc. both versions are in 5.1.audio. This isn't really a 'war film' as such,but a film about a boy and his experiences in 1943 Belarus as the Germans are dealing with partisans( & civilians) ,one section is inspired by actions during 'Operation Cottbus' .there are no 'Defiance' style heroics here,in fact there are no actual battle scenes but mostly grim survival or death.This film blends the realistic with the occasionally beautiful, strange & surreal ,The closest in tone to this is the film 'The Tin Drum' from 1979 .Some people won't like this film- .For others it will be an experience & something they will never forget.

The King is in (the mix)
so keeping it brief ,this disc is an excellent selection of some of mr Clarkes best, produced by Bunny Lee & mixed at King Tubby's'.80 mins of prime 70s' JA roots & culture .with 23 tracks inc 9 dub mixes-as good an introduction to JC as you will find with quite a few more obscure tracks to keep most happy ,available in good sound quality on a well sequenced disc at a good price .highly recommended.Trojan release 2002.

A fair 'fight.
This film while not part of the'revisionist westerns' popular in the late 60s & 70s does have themes in common with them .Though through it's direction & a degree of subtlety means it has aged better than many from this era.Along with Cash & Douglas the film has Karen Black ,Keith Carradine & others familiar to viewers.the film is 4:3 ratio & 90 mins approx ,although not remastered the film quality is ok & the colours still clear. A movie that stays in the memory after viewing .
