A game with few flaws - reminiscent of older final fantasy titles.
I could wax poetic about the various elements of Lost Odyssey that make it such a tremendous game, but many other reviewers have already touched upon the leveling system, the battle mechanics, the graphics, the story, the writing, the score, the characters, the difficulty... everything. Instead, I will say if you are looking for the lost magic in the Final Fantasy series that has been curiously missing since FFX, here it is. The team that developed FFIX are also responsible for this wonderful game and it shows. Final Fantasy fans who have been with the series from the start will love this game down to the last pixel.

Okami is a must-play title on the PS2 for all gamers
You need not look any further than the name of the game to see the light-hearted sense of humor you will find in this game - the name itself is a pun (meaning both "wolf" and "great god"). You play as the sun goddess Amaterasu who is reborn in a time when the world is being infected by darkness. She must awaken the gods of the various constellations to earn their powers which manifest in her weapon, the celestial brush. Though the brush is used in combat, it is also used to solve puzzles and to purify the land. Zelda fans will feel immediately at home with Okami with a familiar formula of questing, puzzle solving, and real-time combat. Combat can be too easy at times, but it is balanced out with challenging puzzles including longer boss battles that are, in and of themselves, puzzles. With collectibles and side quests, this game can be quite long - 40-60 hours for completionists. A new game plus option adds some replayability, though I finished my first playthrough wishing to just start a new game right away. It goes without saying, the graphics are a shining part of this game. They mimic the sumi-e (ink wash) style, but the world is full of vivid colors, quite literally bursting across the screen. This game is a treat for the eyes, no question. The brush techniques seem as though they would be best-suited to the wii with motion controls, but without the motion plus, it is not an exact science - it is definitely easier to get used to making circles with the joystick on the playstation controller. Controls are overall natural and easy to pick up right out of the box. Okami is one of those games that was a critical success, but did not have the sales to match. It was released within a week of Final Fantasy XII and suffered the blow of the Squeenix juggernaut on initial sales. Whatever reason you missed this game before now, there is no time like the present to pick it up!

Wonderful game, a tribute to Final Fantasy fans!
Final Fantasy IX is Squaresoft's "thank you" to the fans. It is a return to the roots of the series, full of references to other games, with a leveling system that encourages the player to try out a variety of equipment. FFIX does not have the heavy-handed feeling of some of the other installments of the series, nor is it set in the steam-punk world of VII, VIII, or XIII. Zidane, the monkey-tailed protagonist, has a bright personality, laughs in the face of danger, and doesn't spend the whole game navel-gazing. The music is my favorite in the series - oftentimes whimsical, setting the mood for the story. You have seen the story before if you have played other RPGs, but it takes what would be a cliche story and breathes life into it. The end result is the game feels more like a tried and true archetype than a cliche. There are two optional bosses in the game that require completing two long game-expansive sidequests to fight (at least, if you want to stand a chance against them). Both bosses present a challenge and are very rewarding to beat. As with other Final Fantasy titles, there is also a tiny island covered in enemies known as Yans that are more difficult as random encounters than even the final boss in the game (you've been warned). Assuming you do not partake in the sidequests, this game will run you about 35-40 hours spanning four discs. PS3 or PSP owners can also find this game on PSN for $10. Do not bother with the official strategy guide if you are looking to use a guide to complete the game; it used an online link-up system that is most likely defunct and was annoying at best at the time this game came out. The shining, selling point of this game, hands down, is the ending. FFIX has the most emotional, beautiful ending of any game I have ever played - I have happily re-played the game several times just to get to the end. The ending alone is worth the price of admission.
