Great Flash - Great Value for the money spent -
This is a quick review of the Metz Mecablitz 48 AF-1 Shoe Mount Flash for Olympus. This review applies to my experience with both the 48AF-1 and 50AF-1 models. I originally purchased the 48AF-1 unit because the Metz line of flashes are known for quality and reliability. The 48AF-1 did not disappoint. I recently purchased an Olympus OM-D EM-1 with an FL-600R flash and wanted the ability to be more creative with off-camera flash. I purchased the 48AF-1 for less than $90 and was prepared to gamble on how well it would work with the Olympus RC flash system. Since the Metz flashes are equipped with a usb port to update firmware, I was able to perform the update and take full advantage of the Olympus RC system. The Metz flash communicates flawlessly with my EM-1 in both TTL
and in manually setting power levels. The Metz menu system is straightforward and fairly intuitive. Once set to TTL, with the proper group and channel set as well, the flash can be controlled by the camera in TTL mode. Keeping the flash set to TTL slave, you can choose manual control from the camera menu and set the Metz from full power to 1/128 power.
This flash has full bounce and swivel capabilities and works well both on and off camera. The build quality, power, performance and overall functionality make it a good alternative. This is especially true for off-camera use where its size is less of a concern. I certainly prefer the FL-600R for on-camera use as it is much smaller. The 48AF-1 in practical use appears to be slightly more powerful. Putting things in perspective, the FL-600R cost $299 and, as stated earlier, I purchased the 48AF-1 for less than $90. I was so happy with this unit that I also purchased the 50AF-1 (about $110) shortly after. I was unable to find an available 48AF-1 and settled on the 50AF-1 since it was all I could find. Again, subsequent to the firmware update, it works great with
my EM-1. As a side note, I use the Aokatec AK-TTL radio trigger system with these flashes with 100% reliability and full communication with the EM-1 with no line of sight issues. I would highly recommend these Metz units, especially for off-camera use.
