Survivor for the arty
Excellent acting from a large cast with decent dialogue and pacing. Not hard to see why it's a highly rated series. Problem I had with the series is that all the characters are hard to like.
As an alternative I would recommend seasons of Australian Survivor!

Drill Baby Drill
Useful 'tune-up' book. The format is 50 of mate-in-1, 50 mate-in-2 etc up to mate-in-4. The layout is unusual as you get two puzzles per page - very easy to read - and the solutions are giving at the back with move-by-move diagrams, thus no physical board is required for anything you find too tricky or dubious as to your own solution.
There are of course other puzzles books with far more puzzles, the 1001 format is common, however these are likely to come with increased physical size and more illegible diagrams.
You could also adopt the 'woodpecker method' as the puzzles naturally get more difficult as you 'read' the book. I also suspect that a small collection of puzzles are of more worth than a large collection as repeated drilling is more likely to 'burn-in' the mating patterns.

Faithful to the Book
Although it doesn't have the gloss and camera work of a modern production the acting is all there. In particular the counterpoint Kitty/Levin story line is played out in full whereas in the shorter movie format this is usually skipped to concentrate solely on Anna - which kind of misses the whole point of the book, somewhat. As such the series follows the book extremely well - missing is the dated Russian serf politics which I doubt anyone would be interested in for drama purposes. The period and customs are all captured well..
Much credit is giving to Nicola Pagett but really I feel Eric Porter steals the show in terms of acting.
The only real problem is the Russian naming conventions the substiles of which are a bit foreign to British viewers and occasionally difficult to follow - both in the series and book.
