Profoundly engaging.
This is an extraordinary work, unlike anything else I have read. The author and her husband came into possession of a "Winter Count," which is a buffalo robe used to record the history of a nomadic plains Indian band (Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Kiowa and many others). Each year during the winter, when the band was hunkered down in places like the Black Hills, one member painted on the soft side of a buffalo robe a picture showing the most significant event of his/her band the previous year. Ms. and Mr. Hill had a winter count covering a span of four generations. They also had a good friend who was a Lakota elder, raised in the old ways and language. The three of them worked out the story line suggested by the pictures. Then they spent considerable time translating the story into Lakota, a challenge because differences between the languages reflected different ways of thinking and seeing the world. When the story was completely translated into Lakota, they then began the even more laborious work of translating it back into English, preserving the Lakota way of thought. The result is an uncommonly enjoyable and memorable reading experience. Reading the first few chapters was unusual because of the strong Lakota flavor of the narrative and structure. Then the reader gets into the rhythm. The book provides not only a lively good story, but also deep insights into Indian life and history.
