Old Southern Recipes
Although this cookbook was published in 1950, most of the recipes are much older, and a few were passed down from Civil War days. Excellent recipes!!! My mother had this cookbook, and since buying this copy, I can't stop trying the recipes. I've tried 7 so far, and my family raved about all of them. The Creamed Stuffed Eggs with Mushroom Sauce is one of the best things I've ever tasted! And be sure to make the wonderful Bakewell Tart to enjoy with afternoon tea.
This was written before the days of artificial ingredients, low fat dishes, etc. This is real food, with cream, butter, lard, garden fresh produce, and a large variety of meats. Food that tastes the way it should, the way you remember from long ago.
Not only is it a wealth of truly good recipes, but it's fascinating to read! Entertaining and informative. A peek into life long ago. Great for any cook. Great to give as a gift.

Wonderful book!
Glimpses of a loving, caring family interacting. Realistic illustrations. It was a favorite of our children, and I bought this for our grandchildren.

True heroism at its finest
This is old-school character building 101. A brave young boy defends his family from murderers. A riveting, true account that instills manliness, courage, duty, responsibility, and love of family. The Matchlock Gun was chosen by the American Library Association as The Most Distinguished Contribution to Literature for Children published in 1941.
This is intense. Don't expect a fluffy bunny story. It's a real-life crash course in the right way to respond to a worst-case scenario. It should be required reading for every child. This is a rare treasure. They don't write books like this anymore. Get this while you still can.
In 1941, it was recommended for children ages 7-11.
