Rocks and Hard Places
Horatio Greenough isn't a household name; as well, I was drawn to the cover depiction of his time-consuming stippling technique for the likeness of George Washington. This collection of his drawings and sketches clearly illustrates that talent and explains not only his plight as an American sculptor trained in Europe, but the constant and huge difficulty of procuring marble and transporting the finished product.
The book succinctly explains how these tragic facts impacted Greenough on both a personal and public level. I'm wiser for it.
