BARBIE STYLED BY YUMING 1999 LIMITED EDITION MATTEL # 25792

Beautiful doll, unique and artistic styling
This Barbie, styled by Yuming, is a gorgeous addition to any doll collection. She works best for collectors who enjoy their dolls out of the box, as the box is pretty plain--which is my one complaint about the doll. Her aesthetic is unique and interesting: she carries off an ethereal, airy and dramatic flair in her costume. Yuming (Yumi Matsytoya), the Japanese pop star who designed this doll, modeled the outfit after one of her own on-stage looks. The doll's two-piece outfit is made from pink and blue chiffon trimmed with gold. The skirt is draped and layered, floating gracefully away from her body--I love the small scale floral pattern on the bottom-most layer. She includes two pieces of wired ribbon that you can use as a sash; or shape it to stand up over her head, as is shown in her promo photo. She also includes open-toe heels. The doll has a unique face sculpt--this was the first time this particular face mold was used. Since it's probably been used on another doll, but I can't seem to find out which one(s). This doll has intricately styled raven hair, and beautifully painted red lips, which add to the drama of her avant-garde look. She has a golden crown sewn into her hair, and matching earrings, necklace, bracelets and a ring. For collectors who like to play, her costume is removable--the top closes in the back with snaps, as does the skirt. The doll includes a stand as well as a musical instrument. Of course, she requires rubber bands or putty to "hold" the instrument. Because this doll was produced before the Silver/Gold/Platinum labels were introduced, it isn't difficult to find this doll, and she is fairly affordable. Be aware that because of chiffon, her outfit is liable to pick up smells more easily, however, and it is pretty delicate (if you purchase her deboxed). Still, you can still find her in good shape in and out of her box.

A gorgeous 90s era collector Barbie
I was able to find Billions of Dreams, a limited edition of 10,000 dolls, on eBay for a great price of $150 including shipping. She's been on my grail list for some time--I'm one of those Barbie collectors who adores sparkling gowns. My favorite doll when I was growing up was Crystal Barbie, you see. I'd never seen one in person before, and mine arrived mint in her shipper. If you can believe it, she's even more gorgeous than her promotional photos. The doll is a light blonde serene Mackie sculpt with blue eyes. Her hair is styled in an up-do, which I can imagine would be pretty hardy, even if you bought her in used condition. Her gown is spectacular: the palest shade of ice blue, covered with iridescent sequins and crystals at the bodice, which spread out elegantly toward the hem of the large skirt. The skirt is lined in pink satin, and she's wearing a pink petticoat and pink boy shorts to match. (The own reminds me a little of a Thierry Mugler design, especially at the bodice.) The stole is a reversible pink/blue satin, and is easy to put on and restyle, even if you're not very coordinated. Her accessories include oversized silver earrings, dripping with crystals, a matching silver ring, a quilted blue purse with a crystal closure, and ice blue pumps. All in all, I have to admit she's very well made, with her skirt falling nicely and the bodice a perfect fit. Her packaging is large and heavy--a deep box to accommodate her large skirt--so expect to pay a little more for shipping for this doll. Also, she takes up a lot of room in your cabinet. Her skirt is also a little fluffier than the promotional photo, in my opinion--more bell-shaped than A-line. A note on her name: One of these 10,000 dolls produced is the billionth doll that Mattel has created. That's where the "Billions of Dreams" name comes from, I believe. She pretty much belongs in any contemporary Barbie collection. Just keep looking till you find her at a reasonable price!
