ecological understanding both scientific and traditional
Beautifully written exposition of the principles of Native American life and culture, successfully integrating her scientific understanding with traditional wisdom. This book is enlightening and heartwarming, while being scientifically accurate at the same time. A way in to a better understanding of traditional beliefs and knowledge that our modern culture desperately needs.

Predictable but worthy
Stereotyped characters and story. The most dramatic and interesting parts glossed over so we are left with a great deal of telling (via letters) and much less showing. I wonder, if this had been written by a white author, whether it would have gained the same plaudits. Just because it's a black (well meaning ) writer we shouldn't suspend normal critical faculties. There are so many good writers of colour but honestly I don't feel that Tayari Jones has done herself justice with this novel - I'm sure she'll do better next time.
