Historical non-fiction
The book was written by a Harvard student who interrupted his studies and signed on to a sailing vessel as a sailor in 1833. After he returned to Boston, he finished school and became a lawyer. His later legal career included acting as one of the counsels for the United States in the trial of Jefferson Davis, and he appeared in several important cases defending fugitive slaves. Frankly, being a sailor, signed on to a vessel in that era, was effectively the same as being a slave, so he knew the territory and the hardships endured while in servitude..
To read about the life and plight of the sailor at the time, was interesting history. His narrative of visiting and describing California towns like San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco were especially interesting. For example, the shacks composing the 'town' of San Diego were three miles inland at that time. Imagine being there to see that, especially if you are familiar with that city today. He also provides much comment into the plight of the Mexican people in that period of time. The author also added material 24 years later, which was an account of revisiting the places he had been. The paperback reprints after 2009 also include an afterword section.
A few years ago I purchased one of the older hard-back copies, loaned it, and it did not return. I bought this second copy to make sure I had one to refer to in my library. I am not a history buff, but I was taken by this factual recount of years ago.

Does not perform like the original
I used this decades ago, when it was first released, and decided to try it again. I like the scent well enough, and it is about the same as I remember it. It is no longer produced by the original manufacturer, and does not seem to have the same intensity as the original.. The fragrance seems to only last maybe 30 minutes to an hour (I may be a bit generous here). Because it does not last, people can't detect it, and no compliments are likely.
It is not expensive, but because it is now so short-lived, I probably will not purchase again.

K&N re-usable air filter
A good filter that may be re-used many times. Is twice as expensive as the throw-away paper elements, but pays for itself on the first replacement.
I convert all of my vehicles to K&N. It only needs to be done once.
