Listening to the audio tapes and backing up at times with the discs
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich The author is clearly enthusiastic about his specialty here. We have listened to the audio tapes, occasionally go to these discs. Wish the discs had longer scans of the artifacts, the geography, and less the author himself. Someone should take this material, make it briefer but more visual, as Michael Wood has done numerous times, with Alexander, Troy, etc.

Jennifer Bartlett's self absorption
This beautiful book displays Bartlett's paintings of the hours, with a conversation between the artist and her interviewer, the author Deborah Eisenberg. With almost fawning interest the art savvy interviewer brings out memories from Bartlett relevant to the paintings that it seems the artist herself is not aware of until the time of this discussion, but that informed her paintings with subconscious images. The revelations are astonishing. I enjoyed most, Bartlett's commentaries on the effort and goals of painting, her maxims, strategies, experiences in involving herself. These are refreshing and honest and encouraging as Bartlett blends self confidence with self doubt in friendly ways. And there are a lot of these memories! What we don't hear about is the actual experience of her life at the time, her marriage to a French film star, divorce, raising of a child into the art world. One can't help feel that the overall gloomy aspect of these paintings, taken as a whole, and as interpreted by Bartlett herself, must reflect some of that angst. The cheerful interviewer opens saying it's obvious that a child lives here. Not to me. A book so personal might give more, but I expect Bartlett feels she has written enough about it, and as she says, the viewer (of her paintings) has to put in a little effort! So it's only about the paintings. This is a great book for an exploration of the intersection between art and literature..the writing, reflecting, and speaking process bringing fresh perspectives to the art and vica veras.
