Excellent Tool for the price
Silverline Hand Planes get a lot of unjust flak, if you take the time to set this up properly, you’ll have a Hand Plane that will last you a lifetime. The trick is in setting them up and some work is required, if your not sure, look on YouTube, there are loads of videos to show you how. This may not be a 1950’s Stanley and certainly won’t work straight out of the box (think Premium planes for that, with a price tag of around £350) I spent a bit of time making sure the sole was flat, sharpened the iron, and it was good to go. In fact, I liked my Silverline so much, that I took the time to remove the rear handle and carefully reshape it with sandpaper and engineers files, it now fits my hand perfectly, I can adjust the depth without taking my hand off. Show your hand plane some care and attention when setting it up, and it’ll look after you for life.

A great plane at a competitive price

I bought this direct, from a local tool station, as with any hand plane under £350 it needs to be set up. If you can appreciate the fact that the plane needs some work (that can be done by a total amateur after watching a few YouTube videos, you won’t be disappointed) and that’s why it doesn’t cost a premium price, just remember that what is required to set up this plane is EXACTLY the same as what you would have to do if you bought a brand new Stanley.
I started by flattening the back of the iron, sharpened and honed, my attention went to the chip breaker, I literally put an edge on the chip breaker, wood by wright does a great video on this, get these two items right and you are pretty much guaranteed perfect shavings (as long as the sole is flat).
I then reassembled the plane, retracted the iron and flattened the sole. Job done, perfect shavings.

A superb tool for the price
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich On receiving the plane I checked the sole and cheeks for being square, honed the blade, fettled the chip breaker and started to produce gossamer shavings comparable to a number 4 smoothing plane. Comes in its own wooden box which helps to protect it from dirt and moisture, very handy as the plane now lives in my cellar. Highly recommended.
