Mecha Deconstructed. That is all.
The series Neon Genesis Evangelion deserved an epic ending. Due to many constraints - time, budget, and the grind of creating art, the last two episodes of NGE are esoteric and hint at the possibility of the apocalypse without showing the actual "Third Impact."
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the series upon release in Japan, creator Hideaki Anno got the chance to do what every creator dreams of. Anno was given the license - and budget - to create his magnum opus.
This film is not happy, wistful, or mystical. It's downright uncomfortable to watch at times. But if you invested your time into watching the series, then you must see this film for closure.
Probably my favorite film ever if I am to be honest - this series has layers of meaning, but is meant to be confusing at first. Stick with it, look for greater meaning than just one character, and you'll get it.
