40 x 3M EAR Classic Foam Ear Plugs (FREE UK P&P)
    21. Apr 2019
    Classic Motorbike Ear Plugs
I use when riding motorbikes. If you don't fancy spending £££ on moulded earplugs these are the classic design; squeeze them then pop them in your ears wait a minute or two while the foam expands and your ready to go. Road engine and ambient noise can still be heard so you won't be isolated from your riding environment. As they are cheap you can put a few pairs in a couple of jackets, trousers, luggage so you'll always have a pair handy. The plugs do loose the ability to contract or expand when they get a bit grubby but can easily be cleaned buy running under warm water with a little washing up liquid and squeezing the water through and rinse the dirt out then let them dry on a windowsill. Having said that for the price you can throw out older ones and grab a new pair for next to nothing.

Nice footage if you can find the right mount
I bought this minicam as I wanted to record some of my rides on my motorbike, for the price (I paid £50) its a good little gadget, I also upgraded the micro SD card to 8Gb as it comes with a 2Gb card as standard. In its favor its very easy to use and with the mounting kits provided can be attached to most sturdy parts on the bike or your person. The battery is charged when you connect to a PC via USB, but I found I was only getting about an hour of use from a fully charged battery. Footage or still pictures can be downloaded whilst the card is in the cam although I recommend removing the SD card and plugging it straight into the PC/laptop as the files can be quite large, about 1Gb for 30mins footage, and can take an age to transfer if taken from card in device. The camcorder also works as a webcam which means you can set up the view via a laptop whilst the minicam is fixed to your vehicle. Otherwise you may find that what gets recorded is some good quality, but not particularly interesting, footage of the handlebars and clocks (I speak from personal experience!). There are a couple of downsides and some will be specific to using on a motorbike. I found that if the cam is attached to the bike (I've tried it on indicator stalk and wing mirror stalk) then either vibrations from the engine or possibly RF interference causes the picture to 'wobble'- the higher the revs the more interference and the more degraded the footage becomes. The helmet strap that comes with the cam may be fine attached to a cycling helmet but is not long enough to fit round a motorcycle helmet, although I sure it would be relatively easy to make up a strap which could be used with the mount provided. All in all for the price, ease of use and general nattyness of this cam I'm very happy with it. I think I'm going to have to make a few DIY improvements to mounting and battery longevity (basically keep it on charge via the 12V charger on the bike) before I take it out on the roads this summer, but once those things are done I'll have plenty of footage to bore my mates with in the winter.

    Its a Classic Tomtom
Now we've had a few years of SatNavs and TomToms in particular, now seemed like a good time to but one. I borrowed a friends Tomtom Rider and was impressed by the intuitive way all the menus are set out. The tomtom software is standard on all their devices but with the Tomtom One it also features IQ routes; a way to keep up with speed camera locations and general changes in road systems (roads that have turned into one way systems is a good example) that can be logged onto the tomtom and then uploaded and shared with other users. When connected to a PC with Tomtom home Software it will update information about where the satellites are going to be so you can find your position much faster and even indoors. There are now Tomtom XLs that have larger screens but with the clear instructions that the device gives you only need quick glances at the screen to get an idea of where you're heading so I'm quite happy with the standard screen. The size is ideal for stowing in a glove box or parcel shelfs in the car and with the Easyport mount takes very little space wherever you fancy sticking it in your vehicle. Tomtom provide regular map updates (for a fee) and these are updated every quarter or if you fancy a trip abroad you can download maps for other countries too. Good little satnav that has got me out of a few tight spots in the past and probably will in the future. As long as you remember that when you switch on your Tomtom not to switch off your brain these handy devices can get you places fast and safe. Right up until the point when all the satellites stop working and start falling out of the sky, in which case keep a map handy.
