Read the book to meet the monster within, use the TV series to enjoy it

i am an avid follower of the tv series and was very interested to recently hear that there is this book series aswell. Decided to start with this one, dearly devoted dexter, as the tv series deviates from this book and the others that followed. It was a very interesting read, you get an insight into the monster within dexter as he struggles to keep up the facade of a normal life. His complete lack of feelings for characters like debs (sister) and rita (gf) really suprised me, but makes a lot of sence really. It is also interesting that cody (ritas son) also shows monsterish tendancies after it is suggested that he may have killed the neighbours dog, dexter becomes very adament to get involved and teach him the 'code of harry.' This would have been a great addition to the tv series and would have put a completely different twist on his relationship with rita. Unfortunately in the book it stays. I have to, however, warn other tv series lovers that this book unfortunately left me a bit thirsty when it came to detail. And the ending seems especially rushed, which is why i had to knock a star off of the rating.
