    Well worth a few bucks.
A Call To Arms- A Tribute To Iron Maiden I am not a huge Iron Maiden fan, I sought out this release mainly to hear what some band's covers sound like. I am already familiar with the tracks by Angelcorpse, Opeth and Absu from different release formats. But the other main names that sold me where Evoken, Solitude Aeternus, Morgion, and Vital Remains. The first band Steel Prophet have the weakest track of the comp in my opinion, because of it's abominable power metal style. I always avoid bands that play this style like the plague, so it gets the skip treatment every time I spin this disc. If you are into this style it will probably be you're favorite and virtually every other song won't be you're cup of tea. So the preferred start is Ancient Wisdom who remind me a lot of the thrashy rockin-vibe of the Swedish band Bewitched, but with deathy-er vocals which expand into a cool solo towards the end of the Powerslave track. On to Vital Remains being forced to peg things back a few more notches than they normally would with The Trooper. The guitar melodies here are spot on, but the death vocals sound more generic than I would like and it could be by any old death metal band. Angelcorpse remedy this problem by attacking an instrumental Genghis Khan, and display expert musical ability when they don't vomit blasphemies in the vocal department. Track 4 is Solitude Aeternus' version of Hallowed Be Thy Name, probably the most faithful sounding cover here which makes me want to listen to Iron Maiden a bit more than I very seldom do. Next comes New Eden, a band that suffer from a similar style to the first track but not quite as cringe-worthy, usually it is quickly skipped over I have to say it doesn't warrant inclusion. Bringing us up to Opeth's Remember Tomorrow which although is quite subdued suits the song quite well. Next comes Morgion with To Tame A Land with a thick ambient vibe leading into a heavy mid-paced groove and back again and a dense guitar sound that sounds like it belongs on an album like Massive Killing Capacity by Dismember. The length of the track tends to overstay it's welcome though towards the end. Finally the real reason I needed to get this comp, Evoken's version of Strange Land which does what all Evoken's tracks do, which is draw you in in the first few seconds and don't let you out until the last note has subsided. Truly the most epic and original interpretation on this tribute in my eyes and would have fitted better closing the album, to give you a few seconds of silence to breathe and reflect on what you have just heard. Track 9 is by Opera IX doing a 13 minute version of Rime Of The Ancient Mariner which sounds like it is divided into about four parts. It is also the only track to feature female vocals, which I suspect are done by the same vocalist for the clean style as well as the black raspy style. The clean vocals aren't as good as the raspy vocals, but despite this it isn't a bad song because there aren't any other tracks similar to this elsewhere on the comp. Absu have the task of ending proceedings with their instrumental version of Transylvania which is every bit as accomplished as what Angelcorpse came up with. I would have liked to hear Proscriptor attempting another Maiden song with vocals, even if the result turned out a bit cheesy sounding. I think it may have been more enjoyable because of it. Oh, and the album cover looks cool too.

Brutality live up to their name.
Brutality- When The Sky Turns Black. Brutality are one of the most underrated bands from the Florida death metal scene. This series of reissues (each limited to 2000 copies) is a great way to discover the forgotten sounds of Brutality. This the bands second album originally released through Nuclear Blast continues in the same vein as their first album Screams Of Anguish with more acoustic passages that achieve a more original style, sounding between Malevolent Creation, Suffocation, and Morbid Angel. Something that requires quite an accomplished musical ability to pull off. The simple fact is this is a great death metal album from the glory days of death metal. Like many other death metal bands from that period Brutality found things tough when the death metal boom of the early 90's lost popularity to the rising black metal trend. Soon after the release of the bands third album the bands ten year existence came to an end as the band called it a day. Reformations took place in 2001, and later in 2008 but the bands forth album From The Darkness seems fated not to see the light of day as record deals have fallen through. Still if Brutality are to be remembered it is for their efforts on the bands first two albums which people should discover. So if technical death metal is your cup of tea you can't go wrong with Brutality.
Sleep - Leagues Beneath VINYL LP

    Sleep - Leagues Beneath
After the new slab of heavy doom that was The Sciences album comes another equally heavy doom track in Leagues Beneath. This track is no japan only bonus track oddity that is of some lesser quality to what one will find on the most recent album either. It crushes and grooves along as heavy as any great classic doom will right out of the gates, then pegs things back to build for the vocals to kick into gear (all of which can be found in circular writing on the back of the sleeve). Like most of Sleep's lyrics they appear to be sort of encrypted in meaning. My interpretation is something smashing into the ocean floor and transforming into the next metamorph creature of it's life cycle, leaving it's shell to drift with the tide. Musically this would also be consistent to the passages that make up the length of this 17 minute track. This really is one of the bands best songs to date. It has some brilliant guitar sections in the vein of those littered throughout The Sciences album and when the vocals have ended a killer riff with effects layered over the top of it really give you that underwater feel that would typically distort sounds in the density of liquid, leaving you in a blissed out state by the end of it. Where The Clarity failed I feel was trying to continue the narrative of Dopesmoker with a song under the 10 minute mark that didn't quite fit some 11 years after the album got the reworking it deserved. Leagues Beneath can also be seen as that same next experimental chapter expanding on the themes of The Sciences album and we didn't need to see an extended hiatus between them. 2018 has been a very productive year for the mighty stoner doom overlords in terms of recorded output. If you are a fan of this band or this genre and have a vinyl player it would be in your best interests to secure yourself a copy of Leagues Beneath before they become sparse.
