Old desires turn into a lifestyle change!
When I was a kid the other young people in the neighborhood played all summer long barefooted. I couldn't tell you why, but I envied them so much. My parents wouldn't have anything to do with it. Once, I drew a picture of a boy playing around in a yard barefooted; I thought it would be a good hint. My dad looked at it and said, "What's this all about?" I told him I really wanted to play with my friends and go barefooted. He said, "You can't--and that's final." On another day when the neighbor kids were outside playing and my dad wasn't home, I intentionally put my foot, with my shoe on, into a pan of dirty oil my dad had drained from the car the evening before. Mom was in the house having coffee with a lady friend. I went to the door and told mom I had "accidentally" stepped into dad's old oil and couldn't wear my shoes. She said, "Tough luck for you, because you are not going barefooted!" Her friend said, "Gwen, I think the kids wants to go barefooted--why don't you let him?" Mom said, "Never!" So, now at 68 years old I finally got it in my head (second childhood perhaps) that I want to do what I couldn't do as a kid! Mom and dad are long gone now. I needed to get up the courage to overcome the idea of injury and the social stigma attached to going without shoes. "The Barefoot Book" is a great source of information on the topic; it's very informative and uplifting. For the last two months I have gone barefooted anywhere that I'm not restricted--I LOVE IT! I take the dogs for a mile and a quarter walk on pavement every morning. I even took the younger Boxer to the state park and walked a 2 1/2 mile trail. It gets more comfortable everyday. The only downside is I don't want to wear shoes at all anymore. This winter will be rough--but I'm real excited about the beginning of next summer. If you are like me and want to get back to childhood basics or a lost past--"The Barefoot Book" is a great place to start. Life is short; go for it!
P.S. When I was a teen I wanted a surplus Army Jeep. Dad said emphatically: "NO! They're made to pull heavy loads on muddy roads! They have a short wheelbase and will tip over--you will never have one!" Guess what I have been driving for the last 14 years! :D
