UNSEEN LUSITANIA - NEW HARDCOVER BOOK
09. Feb 2017
THE UNSEEN LUSITANIA by Eric Sauder
This book is a must for any serious Lusitania student. Not only does It contain rare photographs never before seen, but Mr. Sauder is one of the finest experts on the ship. He tells about how the ship came to be built, problems Cunard had with it and what a passenger, depending on class could expect. The author hardly goes into detail about the sinking, probably because there are excellent books that cover that part of the ship's tragedy. An excellent book, plenty of pictures and good reading make this book a must for any Lusitania student. I have been waiting for years for a book of this type to appear. It was worth the wait!

TITANIC - THE COMPLETE STORY-HISTORY CHANNEL
Having been a serious TITANIC student for over 45 years, I collect any documentary and books (which are deemed good enough) on the subject. This title is a great addition for anyone who is interested in the Titanic. Someone with a casual interest to a serious TIITANIC student will find plenty of documentation and interviews with serious TITANIC students, including Walter Lord who wroter "A Night To Remember." This set was originally issued on A & E on a 2-disc set. It was re-issued as part of the History Channel Collection and includes a third disc with more material. I have read all the material a serious Titanic student looks for, including books by the survivors, the 1911 issue of "Shipbuilder" the American and British inquiries of 1912 and various articles and documentries, not to mention boxloads of issues of "The Titanic Commutator" by the Titanic Historical Society which I have had over the years. It is with this extensive research that I can say that I highly recommend "TITANIC - THE COMPLETE STORY" distributed by the History Channel, although I do not know if the title is still available. Search for it on E-Bay! An excellent production - and the documentary sticks to the subject - more than I can say for the 1997 film "Titanic." A MUST for "Titanic" collectors and researchers! Yamaha DSP A-1 Processing Amplifier
This model, known as Yamaha’s “10th Anniversary” edition since the introduction of the DSP-1 processor, is a big change in all of its predecessors. The first change, clearly visible, is the size. This beast, completely boxed weights over 100lbs. It succeeds the highly-regarded DSP-A3090 Soundfield Processing Amplifier, the first one to feature Dolby Digital. The Yamaha DSP-A1 would be the last model to be an integrated amplifier. The word “integrated” is used to describe a component which has a pre-amplifier and amplifier, but lacks a tuner. The model which would replace the DSP-A1, the RX-V1 processor would be the first of a series of processors, right up to the current production RX-Z9 which has a tuner and, therefore, the unit is called a receiver. The DSP-A1 features a whopping 110 watts to five channels and 35 watts to the “front effect” speakers. For those of you in confusion as to what “front effect” speakers are, they are a pair of “surround processing speakers, which are placed high and above the main channel speakers; the main channel speakers produce the natural, unprocessed sound (although you can opt to skip the “front effect” speakers and mix the processed sound through the main) and when that effect is used in conjunction with all the other channels, the results are staggering. This unit also features 42 DSP modes and also introduces the DTS (Digital Theater Sound), the other available home theater Digital surround format, in addition to Dolby Digital. It has a feature called “late-night listening” which allows you to hear your Dolby Digital without a blast of volume overtaking the main levels. The amplifier is very clean sounding. Even without the DSP effects, it will provide plenty of distortion-free clean sound to two channels, if that is what you desire. Yamaha did not stop there! They made this unit “obselete-proof” by allowing for the addition of a decoder for any other type of Digital Processing which might come along (SDDS-Sony Dynamic Digital Sound – the only other movie Digital Surround Processing format?) The only thing I found flimsy on this unit was the remote control: it feels like it is made of tin and the entire unit opens to display plenty of buttons for different functions. It does “glow in the dark,” but I think the remote control units for the previous DSP-A3090 and the replacement model RX-V1 were far more superior in terms of durability. By the way, the last production runs of the DSP-A1, called the DSP-A1x came with the same remote control as the Yamaha RX-V1. When considering to place a bid on E-Bay for this unit, or any audio component, it is important to ask the seller these questions, if they are not included in the description: (1) Are you the original owner? (2) Does this unit come complete with the original packaging – that is, the box and wrappings? I have found that people who keep these things are more likely to really care for the unit. That statement does not mean the unit is free of defects – (see # 3), but on a large scale, anyone who takes the trouble of saving all of these packing items is likely to care for the unit. I have all the packing items for my many components. (3). Does the unit work properly? How thorough was it tested? Is there any scratchiness in either the input selector or volume control? Does the display unit work properly? (4) Is the remote control included as well as the instructions?
