Solid professional-quality equipment
This lens is sharper than a 12 meg sensor can capture, and it is easy to focus well.
There are plenty of detailed reviews available for this lens online, but I will share a couple of observations after using it on an older D700 for a while.
Using this lens on a modern camera means that you have to use manually-set aperture settings (which are done, conveniently, on the lens itself in the old way), but if you are serious enough about photography to consider buying a lens like this one, that should be no big deal (you should be picking specific apertures anyway, and the aperture ring makes it easy to do that).
You can let the camera pick the exposure or use the camera's manual controls for that. (And on most cameras these days, you can let the camera pick an appropriate ISO, so you can still focus-then-point-and-shoot with fixed A-S settings if that's your bag.)
Something that might annoy some people is the fact that the manual lens settings controls in (most? all?) Nikon DSLRs don't include the lens name or model (or focus, perhaps obviously), and it annoyed me for about a minute, but I wrote an AppleScript that uses exiftool command lines to fill most of that in later and am happy with the results.
