"My God, why have you foresaken me?"
The fact of the pastor and his mistress going through the motions of reading and attending the Mass, in the final scene, says it all: they don't believe in the Christian dogma but they still need it as it provides some solace in their lives. This is the greatest movie ever made about Christianity.

This is the first feature film to be directed by a black African. It is appropriate, then, that the film strongly portrays the patronizing attitude the former colonizers {the French) had toward the Senegalese. Political freedom does not mean equality
