Portage Lake by John Nichols
I am usually a little hesitant to purchase any book without being able to examine it first but took a chance on this one. I am not disappointed. The book is written as though Maude Kegg is talking to the reader. It does not appear that John Nichols has made any attempt to polish Maude's stories.
In reading the book you get a good insight into what it was like to be an
Ojibwe growing up 100 years ago. The book is somewhat unique in that the left hand page is written in the Ojibwe, or Anishinaabe, language while the right hand page is in english. The addition of at least a few old pictures would have been a nice addition, but overall for anyone interested in the Ojibwe this one of the better books that I have read.

Disappointed
I was very disappointed in this. There are no photos. Everything illustrated is a simple black and white line drawing. Nothing is identified as to origin. Once you are past the cover it is a big disappointment.
