Skip this Sampler and Get the First 4CD Collection
As a long time Dark Shadows fan, I was disappointed with this collection. They only included nine shows, but could have included (at least) ten. I'm not sure who voted for these particular episodes, but most of them don't rank that high on my personal list of favorites. The one that truly belongs here that they included is the episode where Barnabas first met Maggie Evans. Of course a soap opera is not an ideal type of show to single out individual episodes, since so much depends on the continuous buildup of day-to-day continuity. And any selection that could fit on one disk is bound to miss many great shows. That's why you should just buy one of the 4CD collections that have eight continuous weeks worth of shows. Any of those 4CD boxes would be better than this, but I would recommend the first Barnabas set, or the 14th set for those who like Quentin. The fourth set has the aging Barnabas episodes, as well as the introduction of Angelique. One episode they should have included here, but didn't, is the episode where Barnabas spars verbally with Burke Devlin in the Blue Whale over the idea of dueling; it was singled out by Jonathan Frid as one of his favorites.

Great Set of a Great Show
I'm not sure what I can add to the rave reviews this show has gotten. The second season is just as good as the first. The DVD set has plenty of special features that anyone who wants to go "behind the scenes" will appreciate. Bryan Cranston contributes to voice-over commentary along with creator Vince Gilligan and others. Sometimes they joke over a scene that one might like to know a little more about, but that's just nit-picking.

Type Fonts for the Digital Age
This is another good book for typophiles by Alan Haley, professional typographer and author of several typography books. In Hot Designers, Cool Fonts, outstanding type designers of the 1990's discuss aspects of type design, including software preferences. Some of the ideas are dated due to updates in technology, but most of the advice is timeless. Whether you intend to design fonts of your own, or just want to get more background on relatively recent typeface designs (as opposed to classic fonts like Garamond, Century Schoolbook, etc.) this book belongs in type lovers' libraries.
