Homicide: Life on the Street - The Complete Series Seasons 1 through 7

    Homicide
Being from Baltimore, I have a strong love for my town, and anything that reminds me of home. This show makes me miss it just a little bit more. The authenticity that Barry Levinson and David Simon brought to the show, based on Simon's book, from the characters to the locations, really makes the watcher feel like he/she's in the story. I fell in love with the show when it was on TV, and have been searching for it on DVD for the longest time. Finally was able to find all seasons, and watched them all over the course of about 2 weeks. There were so many things I remembered from watching them previously, but it was still like watching them brand new. The characters jump off the screen and make you feel exactly what they're going through. All the angst from Tim Bayliss when he first joins the homicide unit, all the way through to the end when he's the established homicide police is completely believable. You can see the progress he makes from episode to episode. It's the same with all the other characters, too. Beau Felton, Kay Howard, Stan Bolander. John Munch, Meldrick Lewis, Al Giardello, and especially, Frank Pembleton (brilliantly played by Andre Braugher). The real star of the show, for me at least, is the city itself. From Fell's Point to Camden Yards, and so many spots in between, the show held so many memories for me. There are many comparisons to be made between Homicide and The Wire, Simon's other incredible Baltimore story, and they're definitely applicable. While the Wire is also an amazing tale, for me Homicide is just a bit better. I enjoyed the way the stories in The Wire carried out over entire seasons, but I preferred Homicide's new story each episode. The characters continue to grow, but they deal with different challenges with each new episode. You owe it to yourselves, whether you're from B'more or not, to give this show a watch. You'll find yourselves really feeling for the characters, an pulling for them to solve whatever crimes come up, and also to solve whatever personal challenges they face.
