Good enough
A pretty substantial book, with nice bindings and illus; - some wear and tear takes away a 5star rating.

Garden of Delights
For some time I have been pondering which of Freddy Gardner's cds to buy, then along comes this 2cd set at a bargain price. If you like pre-war jazz, elegant saxophone playing or the British big bands, then this is a must. There are 51 tracks, some of them rarities They can basically be divided into two types: the jazz and the light music. Some are a little of both and there a couple of novelty songs, too.
Whatever he played: clarinet, alto, tenor and baritone sax, he always had the same character and brilliant technique. Whichever kind of music he played also seemed to suit him, whether archly romantic, driving swing or playful pops. There are no wasted notes, no burbling till ideas come ( I should think most of these solos were worked-out before hand) no effects. This is honest music played by a man of impeccable taste, rather like Benny Carter, who also appears on this set. I have a preference for the tracks with only rhythm section, here he stands alone. Although some of the light numbers might be risible by today's standard, get behind the dated sound and there is real artistry. In fact, it may be the romantic pieces that stay longest in the mind, especially "Valse vanite" by that other sax all-rounder Rudy Wiedoft. My favourite so far is "Softly as in a morning sunrise" which starts "straight" but moves into hot territory.
My only complaint would be that there are no personnel details, though the ensembles are named and the recording dates, you wouldn't get that on most budget cds. Oh and the fact that the photo of Gardner makes him look like a mad strangler!
