Dungarees and Dobros
I am a big apologist for Captain Beefheart's so-called 'Tragic Band' period in the mid-1970s. Although I am a fan of his classic late-sixties and late seventies 'revival' periods (especially 'Trout Mask Replica'), I don't believe that 'Unconditionally Guaranteed' and 'Blue Jeans...' are as bad as critics make out. The music on both is good an it is interesting to hear such a great voice in a different setting - i.e. not trying to play the 'freak', but actually making a good stab at 'selling out'.
It's all a question of context. Beefheart was following a musical line in the early to late seventies that saw a genune melding of black and white styles, perhaps most successfully done by Little Feat. Compared to other sixties artists at the time, many of whom were in the first stages of a long decline (Clapton and other British blues-boomers in particular), the Captain makes a pretty good fist of trying out other styles of black music that were not limited to the Blues. There is a pretty good funk work-out on 'Party of Special Things To Do' and a good version of J. J. Cale's 'Same Old Blues' - which isn't actually a blues song. As befits a collection of outtakes and try-outs that wouldn't otherwise make a 'proper' album, there is stuff that doesn't work - especially the ballad 'Further than We've Gone', which is the worst thing he ever recorded.
However,it is interesting to note that all the material is in the vein of 'middle of the road' and that there was none of the experimentalism of earlier and later periods, which signifies that the Captain was very much focussed on changing his style at this time and was also quite intent of doing this himself, not actually collaborating in creating the music as he did with other Magic bands. The title track and 'Observatory Crest' (which has had at least two cover versions by groups over the last few years)are quite beguiling and recall the more pop material of the first Magic Band album. In this sense, 'Guaranteed' and 'Blue Jeans ..' are not such an aberration from a career that was all too brief and always intriguing.

Okay
Not so much 'boss' reggae, more middle management, but still some interesting tracks.

Too Short!
This album is only 28 minutes long! There is surely more music available from the original live recording. Also, the advertised artists do not appear on all the tracks and does not reflect the quality of the performance, which was improvised music. The label Hi-Hat have been really lazy and negligent with this release.
