Country Pottery: Traditional Earthenware of Britain by Andrew McGarva

Strongly illustrated with good commentary.

Sits well in the 'must have' books on the subject of historic country pottery from (mainly) England and Wales. This has a very good set of photographs supported by informed text. The potteries are those from the mid C19th to the millenium, with some currency. McGarva has a high level of knowledge of the subject, and as a potter, quite some consideration for the details passed over by less experienced commentators. Someone needs to assemble another book to document and illustrate similar potteries from Medieval through to the rise of the Art potteries and wholesale industrial take-over of these largely rural rustic or agricultural concerns. Why were such anonymous functional pots, potteries and techniques 'rediscovered' in the C20th? This book offers real insight and covers as much of the known and available history current at the time of writing. I think Andrew McGarva has laid a terrific foundation and truly opened our eyes to the strength and perseverance of this remarkable part of the British pottery scene. Inspiring & recommended to potters, scholars and collectors!
