Adventurous women on the Grand Tour
Georgian England had very rigid ideas of the place of women in society. Whilst most men of the Enlightenment traveled to broaden their education (and to add to their art collections), women were restricted in all aspects of their lives. Even upper-class and wealthy women were constrained by family, religion and lack of control of their own money. But some women achieved freedom. This book is a fascinating account of the lives of a dozen women who broke with the conventions which kept them poorly educated, tied to family and limited in their education: they traveled alone, or with friends to "see the world" and see how women lived elsewhere, to meet new ideas and to be free. Some, against all odds, had already learned classical Greek and Latin, others used a knowledge of modern languages to open doors. Many decided never to return to the restrictions of England. "The Grand Tour" as rarely presented, from their letters and journals. A very interesting read.
