An Essential Upgrade
I bought the AMD Phenom X4 9850 CPU, running at 2.5 GHz, to upgrade the original AMD Phenom 9100e Quad-Core CPU, running at 1.80 GHz, on my Gateway DX4200.
I bought this desktop in 2008, so it's fairly old. However, because this particular CPU provides the maximum upgrade path, along with a max of 8 GB RAM, it was essential, and not just a nicety.
In summary, with 8 GB of RAM, the 9850 AMD CPU (95 W), and a decent graphics card, this PC is max'd out performance-wise. No real need to buy a new desktop, and this particular upgrade only cost about $35. I bought a laptop, with a 2.5 GHz Intel I7 CPU, at close to $1500. Not a bad investment at just $35!
