As it was a like-for-like replacement, you only need to replace the front part which contains all the electronics, which simply slots into where the original detached. This means you don't have to disconnect and reconnect any of the wires coming into the back part, which is really only a terminal board.
The programmer is relatively easy, if a bit laborious, to programme. You can set the times to within 10 minutes for the heating and or hot water, for three periods each day of the week. You can have these times different for each day, or can have them the same each day, which is a bit easier and takes less time to set up. Also useful are the Boost override buttons which allows you to bring on the heating and / or hot water for 1 or 2 hours at any time.
One thing to watch is if you turn off the mains electric switch on the wall, say over the summer, the controller's battery is used more keeping its time setting, and eventually shortens the life of the battery. Ours lasted 4 years, switching the system off at the wall in the summer months. If the battery has run out, when you restore the mains electric supply, the unit will work, but you have to re-programme the time, and each heating and hot water settings. This works fine until there is a break in the power e.g. power cut, when the controller loses the time and all your settings. The battery is non-replaceable, meaning you have to buy a replacement controller, like we have had to do. The expected life is stated as 5 years by the manufacturer. I'm not sure how you get round this without leaving the mains power on all the time.
