Absolutely wonderful and captivating
I am not much qualified to review opera on DVD as I only got into opera a couple years ago and have only watched a couple dozen on DVD. Also I have no musical training to go by. But from the perspective that I strongly prefer traditional staging, I went ahead with this rather non-traditional staged DVD mainly because I wanted to get a Wagner opera with Waltraud Meier in it. I was not dissapointed. In fact, I was delighted and finished all 4 hours (3 hrs opera plus 1 hr documentary) in short order. It was my first time watching Lohengrin and I found this like the book that is so good you cannot put it down. While the staging is non-traditional and appears to be relatively modern like maybe set within the past 30-40 years, it did not detract in the least from my viewing experience. The main set feature was the sets of stairs and they were re-positioned in various ways that kept the set interesting. The best part was the acting and vocals were in my estimation superb. And since I picked this one particularly for Waltraud Meier, I will point out that as she is playing an evil woman, a sorceress in fact, she plays the part to the hilt and simply exudes evil in this production. And as corny as it seems for Lonengrin to wear a shiny silver business suit, it worked for me just fine. There is a scene in the bridal chamber where he is paying a weird piano (backward according to some other review), I did not find it a detraction at all. The wedding march is not done as a march at all but as background music to the bridal chamber scene. So, I highly recommend this set and as I watched the documentary first I think that helped me have a greater appreciation for the production. There are two sound selections and I found the surround sound worked better for me even though I have a simple setup of computer speakers with separate woofer (either a sub-woofer or a pseudo sub-woofer).

A wonderful Tosca production both visually and vocally
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich I liked everything about this DVD, the singing, the acting, the staging. I prefer traditional staging and this is exactly that and very well done. The actors all look real, their personal looks fitting the parts they play very well. Placido Domingo is great and his aria before Tosca visits him prior to the firing squad is magnificent. Hildegard Behrens really gets spooky when she is saying to the dying Scarpis, "die, die," almost to the point that she seems to be possessed. She also does a beautifully executed jump off the parapet wall, and I love the way she throws her shawl/overcoat at the pursuing henchmen to slow them down just before she jumps. And very tastefully (unlike some productions on DVD) they do not show her lying in a pool of blood on the street below. The English subtitles are very valuable and helped me to further appreciate this opera.

Not your first Johnny Winter album, for die hards.
This album is pretty much very old stuff, mostly from the early 60s, before he became a star (1969). You have to remember he was playing the popular stuff to some degree in order to get gigs. A lot of it sounds like the Everly Brothers. I like it, but if you are looking for a rocking or power blues Johnny Winter CD get Still Alive and Well for rockin, or Serious Business for blues. But if you are like me and have about 30 Johnny Winter albums, you will want this to help complete the picture. I have three other collections of this early material and still don't have it all. This CD has a lot of good stuff, in fact the only dog on this is Road Runner which comes of a bit corny. Note that "Broke and Lonely" was later done on the Third Degree album (1986), both versions are good, but the Third Degree version is the best. Also, "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbuy" was done again in '84 on the excellent Guitar Slinger album. Again, both good, but the later one much better. The last track, "Leavin Blues" is an excellent slide guitar tune. Yeah, if you have some Johnny Winter rock and some of his blues and are looking for something different, this is a fun album and if the timing had been right.
