Don't buy HP calculators made in China

HP 17bII calculators deserve a 5 star rating IF -- big IF -- they are manufactured anywhere, except China. HP used to manufacture its calculators in many countries, including the US, Brazil, Singapore, etc. They were outstanding.
Over the past few years, the vast majority of HP calculators have been manufactured in China. And they are TERRIBLE. Sticking keys, error messages in the midst of operations, etc. I have owned a few and I have returned/discarded all of them.
The silver calculator shown to the right is a newer model probably manufactured in China. As a rule, I ask eBay sellers to specify the country of origin. Don't be afraid to buy older calculators made anywhere else. Avoid those made in China.

USA Made HP 12C Are the Best Made. Look for Made in the USA!
The HP12C Financial Calculator is an industry standard. And this USA-made version is top quality. I purchased my first USA-made HP12C was purchased in 1989. Unfortunately, I lost it while traveling on business in the late 1990s. HP later outsourced the manufacturing to Singapore and Brazil. They, too, were top quality.
Today, they are made in China. They malfunction easily, are unreliable, keystrokes require more effort. The Chinese-made versions have failed on me in the middle of audits, licensing exams, etc.
So, when I found this USA-made HP12C, I took the leap. Truly a great product.

Recommended for patient beginners
The review question asked whether "the content is compelling?" I would say "yes," if you enjoy baking and reviewing recipes from an accomplished French pastry chef. I purchased this book second-hand. It was in great shape, even better than described and the price was very reasonable.
In my opinion, the recipes and explanations are well-presented. It may be best appreciated by a patient beginner or a baker with some experience. There are other books I would recommend to novice bakers in addition to this one because it takes time and practice to develop the skills and technique. Still, I recommend this cookbook.
