Magnificent Wagner performances
Igor Markevitch was one of the great conductors of the 20th Century, although little known in the USA. This disc is exceptional as it shows him to have been an excellent interpreter of the music of Wagner in the more flowing and transparent style of Pierre Boulez, for example. A further advantage is that he conducts the Berlin Philharmonic, when, in the earlier recordings, it was still the orchestra of Furtwangler, and in the later recordings, when Karajan had not yet changed the "Klang" of the Philharmonic to to the streamlined "platinum" sound it later became under his leadership. This recording stands equally with the great commercial recordings for DGG Markevitch made in 1954/1955 all with the Berlin Philharmonic!

One of the finest collection of Rossini overtures I have ever heard. Playing and sense of humor in the music are marvellous. Do not hesitate.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Sir John Barbirolli came to Mahler relatively late in his career. However, he more than made up for it in his recordings for EMI and his live broadcasts during the final years of his life. No one, not even Bruno Walter or Otto Klemperer understood Mahler's moods depicted in his music better than Sir John. The bitterness, the scarcasm , the cynical, the quixotic, the grotesque are all present in this recording. An additional plus is the magnificent playing of the New Philharmonia Orchestra from the late 1960's. Also, not to be missed is sir John's recording of the Mahler 9th Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic from 1964. Highest recommendation!
