A lonely creepy journey.
I started playing this a couple of weeks ago, partly on my own, and partly with a couple of friends. So far I’m really enjoying it.
The game has a full day/night cycle, and the visuals, although not cutting edge, can be very attractive at times. A lot of the buildings are copy and pasted, but for me this isn’t a problem: since we are in a particular area of Sweden, it makes sense to me that there would be a lot of houses with a similar layout and design.
As far as the gameplay goes, it is very lonely, particularly if you are playing on your own, rather than cooperatively in a group of up to 4 people. Set in an alternative 1980s, the story of why everyone is dead, and what has occurred, is delivered environmentally through written or typed notes, answering machine messages, and so on. I actually love the loneliness. One of my favourite early PS1 games was the original Tomb Raider: I adored the feeling of exploring deep underground, with only wolves, bats, and, of course THAT large lizard for company!..
You can find weaponry and other items in the environment. The weapons are fairly standard, with pistols, assault and sniper rifles, grenades etc. However, you can find gas bottles, car batteries etc, which can be shot for massive damage, emp blasts and so on. Stealth, and using the environment cleverly, are definitely to your advantage.
The standout feature of the game is undoubtedly the enemy machines. There are several types that you face, from very small to absolutely huge! The way they move feels authentic, and they demonstrate an intelligence that is unusual in this type of game. I have also heard that they can learn from your tactics, which will make them more effective against you, although I can’t verify this as yet.
This brings me to the stellar sound design. The noises the machines make are otherworldly, and to me it sounds like they can communicate with each other. They are genuinely creepy, as well as being highly dangerous! This is backed up by an excellent electronic soundtrack that channels Terminator.
Overall, this is an excellent and somewhat unique game, that I am thoroughly enjoying playing. I haven’t bought the DLC yet, which adds two extra areas, new machines, and NPC survivors, but once I’ve finished the base game, I definitely will!

The ultimate sailing and pirate simulator
As Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably the ultimate horse riding and cowboy simulator in game form, so Sea of Thieves is, in my opinion, the ultimate sailing and pirate simulator to date!
Although technically not up there with Red Dead, the graphics have a wonderful stylised look, which is very easy on the eye. The skies and lighting can be incredibly beautiful.
The gameplay is extremely immersive. Even on the 2 player Sloop, the smallest of the three available ships (the others are Brig and Galleon), the ship actually starts to feel like home after a short amount of time. The sword combat is perhaps a little simplistic, but the pvp ship combat is excellent: to succeed you definitely need to understand reefing sails, wind direction and cannonball arcs. In other words the sailing is actually very realistic! Combine that with a large open world, treasure and secrets to discover, other player ships to sink and loot and ship/character customisation l (a huge amount has apparently been added since launch), this is extremely exciting and satisfying to play.
