sam the cooking guy just a bunch of recipes
this book is pure and earnest sass. sam makes me WANT to cook. sam makes me want to cook HEALTHY. sam makes me laugh out loud--his writing is pithy, edgy, as smart and stimulating as his recipes and irreverence. i wish he lived next door--i'd go over to borrow a smidge of fresh basil and three hours later we'd be throwing back bourbons and discussing manly steaks. i've never watched a cooking show. never been a fan of how-to-tv. this man and his cooking have me hooked. if you only own one cook book, this should be the one. if you've never read a cookbook, read this one. the plot is ludicrous, but all the verbs are active, the images delicious, the syntax over-the-top. check out his recipe for shrimpy. (no, i'm not telling you what it is. this recipe alone is worth twice the price of the book.) his potato soup is easier than opening a can of congealed campbell's, and the ultimate comfort food, and all healthy stuff. his super simple mango salsa really is super simple. you can buy this book for all your friends, and they'll love you---or just cook his recipes for them and they'll love you. win win.

mom hasn't been able to sleep, until these sheets
mom is almost ninety and at that stage where her nights are restless, tossing, turning. she said her sheets "hurt her skin"--they were expensive brand name percale, high thread count. i read the ratings for these sheets and thought the ywere worth a try. WONDERFUL soft, strong, perfect fit. . it may be coincidence, but since she got these sheets on her bed two weeks ago she has been sleeping like a log. no new meds, no new bedtime routine, just these new microfiber sheets--great price, great product. THANK you.

wildflowers: 20 boxed notecards by deborah schenck
i'm sitting here on a dark wisconsin morning in february--we've had over 20 inches of snow in the last few days. yesterday's brief hike up in temperature merely added freezing rain and high winds to the mix. now it's snowing again. but on my desk is the most gorgeous box of wildflowers. they're like a box of hope, of sunshine, of warmth. they're notecards, photos of flowers by deborah schenck. these photographs of single blooms are--quite simply--perfect. deborah schenck has an eye that finds beauty in rustic ordinary field flowers, the confidence and talent to present them without fuss, laying them out on parchment tones in a format suitable for framing. the notecards are in a charming boxed envelope, pretty enough to leave out on your desktop. i have adored these flower cards for five years, ever since i found my dear aunt sitting at her kitchen table with five of these cards lying before her. She was debating which card to send to me, which one best suited her mood and my personality. We laughed about it, but really, they are that special. I started seeking these cards soon after. You pick the perfect flower for the perfect sentiment, the perfect friend, the perfect words. Since then, whenever i've been lucky enough to find a box of schenck's pretty cards, i buy it. over the years i've sent these flowers to very special people, given the box as a treasured gift, had the prints framed for a favorite neighbor. these images suit any decor from rustic to contemporary. these cards will please any person with eyes to see. i enjoy writing a simple happy birthday or thanks for the casserole or thinking of you inside these cards--i've used them for condolances, congratulations, and encouragement. the cards' beauty is half the message.
