Crossing the border (The Atlantic Ocean) the reality
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich When European immigrants crossed the large boarder-- The Atlantic Ocean was their wall. It definitely was not a first class cabin. They were in the lowest part of the boat. No cabins. women and children on one side of the boat, men on the other. They were all
together in one room. Many only had the clothes on their backs. They were from different areas of Europe and spoke many different tongues. Many couldn't communicate with each other. They were only allowed on deck at certain times during the day.
Many became ill and didn't survive the trip.
Once at Ellis Island you had to pass medical and mental exams. If you were too old -- you were on the next boat back to Europe.... There were many rules that even my Bubi didn't tell me about. If you had no one to meet you at the dock, it was a quick turnaround back to Europe. Women who were alone weren't allowed in either. You had to be married or with your family.
This movie is a "must see" for anyone who had relatives go through Ellis Island. The rules changed frequently so, just bcs you crossed the Atlantic Ocean ( the European wall) didn't mean you got into the U.S.A. Moves a little slow at times, but you learn the real conditions on the boat. A bit opposite of what is seen in a Hollywood movie. A good independent film study.
