Warship Observer likely has the world's most comprehensive inventory of Jane's Fighting Ships. Other books on naval matters are carried as well. Every book is examined for merits and faults. Minor repairs are often made. The covers are cleaned, tears may be taped, and loose elements glued. Many older editions have structural issues. Conventional wisdom on the maintenance of antique books is to do only what is absolutely necessary. Few of these books are worthy of that kind of reverence. An 1898 edition will be left alone as long as it has some structural integrity. Later editions are likely to rehabilitated. If it is particularly tricky, a professional bookbinder is used. In-house skills are sufficient to replace hinges and secure loose pages. The terms rare or scarce are overused by some sellers. There is not an edition of JFS printed after 1939 that is rare, scarce or uncommon.
