Product Information

Record of Agarest War Zero is a 2011 prequel to developer Idea Factory's original strategy RPG, which was released in North America one year earlier. The newer game proceeds similarly to its inspiration, with minor refinements to major play mechanics, while its narrative reveals character origins and other back-story details. In the game's turn-based tactical battles, characters can position themselves to team up and execute powerful combo attacks. Although the prequel covers just two generations of legend (instead of five, as in the previous release), the "Soul Breed" dating sim sub-game is more detailed and sophisticated in Zero. Players lead their male hero to woo one of several female non-player characters. Her receptiveness to the hero's advances may be shown in the clothes she wears on her outings with him, as well as in their RPG-style dialog-tree discussions. The offspring of their union becomes the hero in the second half of the adventure. The prequel introduces a "Free Intention" aspect of play, which allows the hero to explore towns, confer with other party members, converse with local villagers, and spend more time finding and winning over the mate he most desires. New, animated character portraits enliven the dating-sim play.

Disappointing for 2011 creation - this is NOT like Hyperdimension Neptunia, Fairy Fencer F, or Mugen Souls
This game looks like a throwback from 1990's. While the Talking-mode is similar to Hyperdimension Neptunia, Fairy Fencer F, & Mugen Souls, the Battle game-mechanics are nothing like those games at all - more like like chess (move to board-square then attack). Attack movements in squares rather than freeflow of most JRPG/RPG from mid 2000's on......tedious and unexciting. The biggest shock was that there was no English voice over. Thankfully, there are lots of English subtitles to read while voice over is in Japanese. All that reading can be tiresome though. Do not make the same mistake. Apart from the Talking-mode, it is otherwise misguided to expect this game to be like Hyperdimension Neptunia, Fairy Fencer F, or Mugen Souls. If you know that before you buy, and do not mind these issues as mentioned, then you should be okay, considering the appropriately low price I paid. The above is about the game itself, of course. The seller is not at fault for the game's disappointing aspects. Both the disc and the game-manual were individually wrapped in clean plastic. Good shipping.
