  • The Long Good-Bye

This book was recommended by one of the lists as one of the best 100 mysteries written in the 1900's/ or a classic. I loved the book at the start but about three-quarters through, found it redundant and repetitive. The writing was excellent in parts -- published in the 1950's, it probably wouldn't have survived a great editor today. I read it for my mystery book club and in the end, I am not sure I would recommend it, as I thught it too long. The man character. Philip Marlowe did help set the standards for a Private Investigator -- honest, smart -- but he was almost "too virtuous" in some ways to be "true". I am not certain I would recommend it really, although I will remember it, so maybe.
