SynopsisKnown for more "first flights" and record flights than any other place, Edwards Air Force Base is legendary. Centered around an ancient dry lakebed in the Mojave Desert 90 miles north of Los Angeles, activity at Edwards has sharpened the cutting edge of aviation and aerospace since the 1940s. The complex is a strategic flight test, research, and development center for the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and civilian contractors. Since the 1950s, almost every U.S. military aircraft has been partially tested here. The skies above Edwards have been the scene of remarkable achievements, including Chuck Yeager's world-famous breaking of the sound barrier in 1947. The base was first established near the small town of Muroc in 1933 and became renowned for its giant runways painted onto the flat, dry lakebed. Speed and altitude records were commonplace at Edwards during the 1950s. Suborbital space flights began there in the 1960s. In the 1970s it was the primary testing site for the space shuttle program. Dramatic aerospace research continues today at Edwards, America's proving ground for the future of high tech aviation., Known for more first flights and record flights than any other place, Edwards Air Force Base is legendary. • deceptive front cover, disappointing pictures

There were no dimensions given in the listing, so getting this small book, about the size of a Squadron Walk Around book, was quite a surprise. Too many of the pictures contained in the book are so dark that details cannot be seen. Other pictures that I have seen in other books were far clearer and in color. These pictures are black and white. I realize many pictures taken back in the 40s-60s were black and white, but these pictures lack the clarity seen in many other publications using the same or very similar pictures taken in the same time frame. As discouraged as I was with the pictures, I have yet to read the text. I was just too disappointed. We lived at Edwards AFB in the mid 60s, so I have seen the XB-70, X-15, YF-12A, and many others so I expected far better pictures. I was going to send this to my little sister that was born at the base, but I was just too disappointed and am very unsure how much she might actually appreciate this book. I do not recommend the book for all the above reasons. I don't think it is worth the money.
