HP 16C Scientific Calculator

Über dieses Produkt

Product Information

The only Hewlett-Packard calculator ever produced specifically for programmers, the HP-16C is a powerful calculator that goes far beyond that narrow realm, as evidenced by its use long after HP produced it in the 1980s. This designation makes the model attractive to collectors, programmers, and mathematicians alike. The HP-16C is part of the company‘s HP Voyager Series, able to display numbers in decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal characters, as well as convert number bases. For more complex calculations, the HP-16C‘s display can be programmed to shift it left and right, which also allows for consistency between the calculator and the user‘s computer. Beyond programming, the HP-16C performs basic arithmetic, reciprocal and square root calculations, and more. Its HP Nut processor also features continuous memory, which means it retains its memory when the calculator is turned off.

  • My "Go-to" Calculator.

Disclaimer: I am a calculator "nut" and I love HP. That said, IMO, HP made a big mistake when they discontinued this calculator and they should consider reintroducing it with a larger, multi-line, pixelated display. The display limitations are really my only ding on this unit but, that was the technology at the time. I rated the HP 16c as a "good value" but, that is subjective. I found one for a "reasonable" price but, I had to search for several weeks to find one in near mint and with original book for a price I was willing to pay. They are considered a must-have by HP calculator collectors so, sellers are asking a bundle. Look for "auctions" and "make an offer" to get a fair price. For me, converting between Hex, Oct and Bin are second nature but converting to Dec is a pain to do manually. The HP 16c makes this instantaneous. Also working with 2's compliment numbers is a breeze. A huge help with logical design, as well. And it's just the coolest in the geekiest possible way. :)

  • Power in a small package - don't buy if hex and binary sound computerese to you!

Don't buy this calculator if you're looking for scientific functions or just ordinary adding and subtracting! This calculator is one of very few models specially made for 1980's computer programmers and probably the most powerful. It helped to deal with binary, hex and octal numbers used in assembly language and system programming. Today it may be helpful if you're into very low level programming or retrocomputing but is probably obsolete to all who programm using an IDE with powerful assistance functions. The build quality is HP at its best and with the small form factor the calculator is handy to use and fits into a shirt pocket. Don't expect to use this beyond the most basic functions without reading the manual as the multi-format display system has some peculiarities which are not readily apparent and allow you to set it to an almost unuseable state even if you're an RPN afficionado. Once you know how all functions work you'll find them to be very well laid out and easy to use. The user interface is of course RPN, so expect some fun when you hand it to someone else and ask him to add 2 and 2...

  • Not sure why this isn't made anymore!

I am impressed with the functionality of this calculator and am surprised that HP (or another mfgr) doesn't still make this or one similar to it... Even in 2018, a standalone unit like this has its advantages over a smartphone app that emulates the HP 16C! This will certainly come in handy when I go back to college for computer science,

  • Vintage HP16

The device is an excellent computer science device , allowing introductory type familiarity with manipulating numbers at the bit level, while providing capability to do assembly language type programming activities, remembering this is a vintage calculator going back 40 years or so.

  • Rarest of the HP Voyager Series Calculators

The HP 16C is the rarest of the HP Voyager Series Calculators, produced through most of the 1980s to aid computer scientists need base 2, 8, 10 and 16 mathematics. The models are highly collectible and the 16C in particular is very sought after.
