Product Information

From award-winning author and illustrator, Wolf Erlbruch, comes one of the world's best children's books about grief and loss. In a curiously heart-warming and elegantly illustrated story, a duck strikes up an unlikely friendship with Death. Duck and Death play together and discuss big questions. Death, dressed in a dressing gown and slippers, is sympathetic and kind and will be duck's companion until the end. I'm cold, she said one evening. Will you warm me a little? Snowflakes drifted down. Something had happened. Death looked at the duck. She'd stopped breathing. She lay quite still. Explaining the topic of death in a way that is honest, lightly philosophical and with gentle humour, this enchanting book has been translated into multiple languages, adapted into an animated movie and short film and performed on stages worldwide.

  • Love this little book

I first glimpsed the beauty of this book in Brain Pickings, a weekly newsletter that comes into my inbox every Sunday morning with juicy articles about things that really matter. As a huge fan of children's literature, I was drawn to the message as well as the artwork, especially since I tend to prefer dark, edgy, even macabre stories that evoke more profound thoughts with a little humor mixed in. The character death is perfect: a bit dry, logical, but strangely cute and expressing humanity in a beautiful way. Duck is naive, innocent but trusting and honest. The interaction between them is heartfelt. This book is a wonderful perspective on death for anyone, young or old and I highly recommend it. It seems the hardcover version of this book is rather out of my grasp, but I'm happy to have the story, even if it is a paperback, it's a nice copy with sturdy pages and looks great on my coffee table.
