Product Information

Winner of the Man Booker Prize Shortlisted for the the Orange Prize Shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award `Dizzyingly, dazzlingly good' Daily Mail 'Our most brilliant English writer' Guardian England, the 1520s. Henry VIII is on the throne, but has no heir. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor, charged with securing the divorce the pope refuses to grant. Into this atmosphere of distrust and need comes Thomas Cromwell, first as Wolsey's clerk, and later his successor. Cromwell is a wholly original man: the son of a brutal blacksmith, a political genius, a briber, a charmer, a bully, a man with a delicate and deadly expertise in manipulating people and events. Ruthless in pursuit of his own interests, he is as ambitious in his wider politics as he is for himself. His reforming agenda is carried out in the grip of a self-interested parliament and a king who fluctuates between romantic passions and murderous rages. From one of our finest living writers, Wolf Hall is that very rare thing: a truly great English novel, one that explores the intersection of individual psychology and wider politics. With a vast array of characters, and richly overflowing with incident, it peels back history to show us Tudor England as a half-made society, moulding itself with great passion and suffering and courage.

  • Thrilling, absorbing historical novel

I was worried that Wolf Hall would prove to be a heavyweight, over-detailed dissertation on the court of Henry VIII. Far from it -- it's a page-turner, hard to put down. It deals with the life of Thomas Cromwell, a tough, cunning, and highly capable businessman, politician and courtier. Author Hilary Mantel seals her place as a great novelist and a fantastic user of English punctuation. Not for the squeamish.

  • A captivating story with it's authencity and colourful characters, a hard book to put down.

I have to say this book was our 'book club' read, and not one I would have chosen myself, but have found it fascinating and have hardly been able to put it down. An excellent writer and one who obviously knows her subject. really takes you to the authentic times of the story, and have fallen for Thomas Cromwell !!The actual second hand book is of very good quality and will keep for years in my bookcase. Thankyou.

  • A good story spoilt by a confusing style of narrative

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel is a historical novel set in the time of Henry 8th with the leading character of Thomas Cromwell. Mantel guides us through his life from a teenager to high office with side issues and intrigue along the way. However I found her style of writing and lack of a linear narrative extremely confusing, she jumps from one era to another back and forth so that when reading the next chapter it can be some time before the reader works out what is going on. I did not enjoy reading and would not recommend this book. The book itself was supplied quickly and in good order by world of books which I would recommend

  • Real historical content, totally believable portraits.

This starts off with a tremendous bang ... real historical content, totally believable character portraits of some of the most variedly interpreted personages. Hilary Mantel draws a complete picture of the times and court of Henry VIII ... you can almost smell, taste and feel the ambience. Well-merited winner of the Man Booker Prize!

  • Amazing, confused right at the beginning but explanation was there when it gave his name as Cromwell

was over the moon with the quality and cost of the book, couldn't believe it. Love the book, having to make notes on each paragraph /section to enable me to keep up with the people and family trees just a preci's of each but really helpful, but enjoying doing it. Wish I could remember it all but at 75 causing problems, referring quickly to the preci's is a great help. I know in the first few pages the names are all there but just need to put it in my kind of format which helps to maintain my understanding as i go through the book. Still at the beginning but enjoying

  • Prize winning novel

I was drawn to this book as it’s a retelling of the career of Thomas Cromwell. Some of the prose, the way she writes, takes some getting used to. But it’s a great novel.
