Adapted from the bestselling novel by Madeleine St John, Ladies in Black is an alluring and tender-hearted comedy drama about the lives of a group of department store employees in 1959 Sydney. Ladies in Black is set in Sydney in the summer of 1959, against the backdrop of Australia's cultural awakening, breakdown of class structures, and liberation of women. It tells the coming-of-age story of suburban schoolgirl Lisa, who while waiting for her final high school exam results with dreams of going to the University of Sydney, takes a summer job at a large department store. Excellent depiction of Australia in 1959/60.
A wonderful movie with a good take on an important time in the story of Australia. The movie closely followed Madeleine St John’s outstanding book, set post World War II with Australia seen as The Lucky Country and large numbers of displaced Europeans arriving to try to make a go of life here. They brought with them old cultures, different foods and languages and embraced the freedom of Australia. The amazing presentation of vibrant Sydney, the bridge, trams, beaches is worth the ticket price alone but the costuming is spot on and takes the viewer back to a time centred on family, manners, appearance and effort and the enjoyment of the simple things of life. I have seen the movie twice and bought the DVD for overseas family to enjoy and understand Australia in 1959 and 1960.

Feel good movie.
Maybe because I used to work at David Jones I was a bit critical but I suppose the women back in the '50s did change their dresses at work. in the late '70s the women would come already dressed in their black dresses. I recognised the store front as the old Mark Foys and I do remember a company called Snows, as seen on the building next door. It seemed to me to be a bit of a mix with the Foys building and the Elizabeth Street store of Davis Jones otherwise it would have been a long walk to get to the fountain in Hyde Park. In all except for my notations I thought it was a 'feel good' family movie.

Worth a look
An interesting movie, quite well scripted and acted, by a well chosen cast. Good to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon. Brought back a few good memories of going to a big city department store with my mother, all those years ago.

Classic Australian Movie
Loved every minute of this movie. It's a classic that will stand the test of time. Wonderful characters and the photography is top class. Just beautiful!

a nice movie, simple tale, but well done, nice to see some of yesrerdays SYDNEY, and how things were, recommend for a cosy night in front of the fire,

Surprising and entertaining, excellent
You fall in love with the characters in this film, without exeption, with the story, the scenery, the reconstruction of the time period, you get some new ideas about Australian society.

Ladies In Black
Such a lovely little, “Gem” of a movie 🎥 to watch. Such fond memories of an era of what shopping was like back in the day at Christmas time, in Australia as a teenager. You’ll never get tired of this movie.
