A most engaging musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber that exceeds all the stage presentations by miles
The Casting of Scotsman Gerard Butler made the most believable Phantom as a lover, with the very youthful innocence of Emmy Rossum, as Christine, they were superb choices to create an intriguing triangle of loyalties in this most poignant classical love story...the voices were fittingly superb as well. Interestingly Butler had no previous musical training, beyond his preparation to take the role of the Phantom, but he carried a deep commanding voice that fit the role perfectly juxtaposed with the lilting soprano voiice of Emmy Rossum. Better than the staged productions, the movie lends itself to vast fantasy of flashbacks and beautiful sets not possible in stage presentations of this classic romantic story.

An All-Time Favorite!
I love musicals. From my earliest memories, my favorite films have been based on musicals: The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Chicago, Beauty and the Beast, Annie..... Well, when this movie came out (without a lot of fanfare), I was a bit concerned that it could never do justice to ALW's stage production. I've seen Phantom live on stage and it would just be hard to compete with that.... However, the film was impressive. In the feature film format, I feel that I appeals to a broader audience, thus possibly creating a new generation of true Phantophiles! My kids loved it, much to my delight, and my girls begged to go and see Phantom on stage when the traveling Broadway troupe came within driving distance of our home. Emmy Rossum plays Christine impeccably and Gerard Butler is my new favorite Phantom. The movie develops the characters in a way that the stage production wasn't permitted to, which I loved. All in all, this has become a family favorite. I've purchased at least 3 copies of the DVD, because we wear them out. My kids want to take them with us on trips to watch in the van, at friends' houses, on vacation, etc. I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves Phantom or who loves musicals or love stories in general!

Still a winner after all these years!
The timeless love story of the Phantom of the Opera still thrills. The music is timeless, the view of the backstage at the Paris Opera House is interesting, and the costumes are striking. The love between Christine and the Phantom (and Christine and Raoul) is intense and suspenseful throughout the film. The quality of the CD is very good. There is a second CD with interviews and backstories about the production with is entertaining and informative. You will enjoy this set of CDs.

I highly recommend DVD even if you saw the live version this is a wonderful supplement to it.
Glad to have this in my collection. Many interesting facts on the 2nd disc.love the story and the characters how many things can be done and film that couldn't be done on the live stage. Here all the characters are showcased in ways that weren't possible can a live performance. It's a classic story done in fine Style by Joel Schumacher. I highly recommended if you don't like the acting you'll certainly love the score!

Haunting!
The MOST haunting, tragic, captivating movie of the Phantom of the Opera ever!! I have seen and heard several versions and this is by far my favorite!! Gerard Butler's portrayal of the Phantom is sublime and his singing is so mesmerizing! Highly recommend!

Phantom is a classic
This movie is wonderful! Its engaging from the first scene when the memories in black and white start bursting with color and the cobwebs lift away to transport us back in time to the story of The Phantom. Gerard Butlers voice is better than expected and Emmy Rossum portrayal of Christine is my favorite in the movies and on stage.

Best Musical Movie Ever!
I LOVE The Phantom of the Opera movie! Emmy Rossum is amazing and beautiful as Christine, Patrick Wilson is an attractive, charming Raoul, and Gerard Butler makes an absolutely fantastic Phantom! This is fairly close to the Broadway show, but is more accessible to watch over and over and never get tired of it!

Way better than the original!!
Such a great movie!! The cast really draws you into the movie!!! Gerard and Emmy did better than Michael and Sarah. Just incredible!! A must watch movie!!!

Highly recommended
I've seen the play live numerous times and loved each performance. But adding the magic of cinematic wonders takes a fantastic play and bring's it to life in a way that's impossible to do on stage.
