Best Desoldering Tool at a Reasonable Price.
If you have any quantity of desoldering to do, using a suction bulb or solder wick is going to get expensive with your time and damage done to copper traces with those cheaper methods. Hakko has changed their handheld desoldering tool twice in the past several years. I first had the Hakko 808, which was a vast improvement from wick or bulb. The FR300 was much better than the 808, with stronger suction, easier removal of the tips for changing and cleaning, and an on/off switch. The FR301 is similar to the FR300 (looks the same), but has made some changes to reduce clogging problems. Hopefully the heating element is improved over the 808, too. After many hours of use and vibration, the 808's heating element leads snapped off where they were brazed to the heater, a $50 item to replace. TIP: Always use the smallest tip that still fits over the leads being desoldered--that gets the strongest suction. The standard 1 mm tip works well for most circuit boards. I use a 1.6 mm for large pins on filter capacitors; a 0.8 mm tip can work well for smaller components. I only use the lowest heat setting, and the the device maintains temp well.
