  • Cadfael is so entertaining.

A friend of mine had a few episodes on tape and they were just great. When I had the chance to buy the series I bought it. It is just wonderful. A PBS mystery series that takes place in England after the Crusades. Cadfael is well trained in herbs and healing after his travels in the Middle East. He has an uncanny ability to unravel clues and discover the bad guy or girl. Every episode is interesting with many surprises. See if you can figure it out. It will a great time for all.

  • The Dark Ages were anything but...

Derek Jadobi is always fun to watch, and Cadfael's whodunits are some of the most entertaining I have found. On top of it all, it is just a lot of fun to wander through the life and times when the British Isle was undergoing so many changes. We love the whole series. The only thing I would change is the table in Cadfael's herbarium, and around which much action there revolves. It is a carpenter's workbench, with a well to hold tools close at hand - and they removed the vise handle and screw. Regardless, it's a nice old wooden table.

  • I read all 21 of the Cadfael books, so I...

I read all 21 of the Cadfael books, so I was able to follow the plots. Some of the scenes are dark and the actors talk too rapidly for me to read the captioning. Also, the actors often whisper. The discs were all in good working order. I plan to binge the set again this winter.

  • One Of The Best In British Television --- Jacobi Is First Rate!

Derek Jacobi is excellent in this series. First rate actor. It is British mystery at it's best. Recommended watching for anyone who likes complex historical murder mysteries. The supporting cast, was well chosen, and the historical settings were a treat to watch. Only wish they had made more of this series. Five star rating for this series.

  • Great Crime Solving Series

This is a great series with Brother Cadfael solving murder and other crimes by critical analysis. He also acts as a sort of coroner, extracting evidence from the bodies of murder victims. If you like "who dun-it" shows, you will enjoy these. I would recommend the set.

  • Interesting & never boring

Gold star mom gift! I know she loved & watched them when my dad worked third shift when I was in school. She tried to get them later but couldn't. We watched a few at my sister's house on netflix or something & she mentioned trying to buy them but unable to get them. So, I looked around & found them. She was thrilled. They are actually kind of interesting. A medieval forensics sort of show. I'm kind of surprised they didn't make more of them. They really are a kind of neat little bit of science mixed in with things. Although, I think the one monk who was always trying to cause trouble ought to have gotten sent to a different monostary or tossed out on his ear.

  • Cadfael - Medieval Herbalist Monk Solves Crimes!

I enjoyed these DVDs (purchased 12 of 13 for $15 and found the missing episode at the library.) The old British series (this one is fairly free of PC, older ones are much better) are a lot of fun to watch. This series follows Brother Cadfael (former Crusader in the Holy Land) as he solves "unsolvable" crimes in 12th century England. As always the production values are very good. The series starts a little slowly but picks up in interest very quickly in subsequent episodes.

  • Cadfael the Monk Detective

This series was on PBS a decade ago or more. Very well written and acted. It has the look of the 13th century but he manages to solve a crime every week. Thoughtful and meaningful characters in stories that serve Justice if not the Law occasionally. You can see them more than once and still enjoy the story as you notice more details. The books were even better.
